Can Barley Water Beat the Sting?

Drinking Barley water has long been used as a natural way to relieve cystitis. So what is the theory behind it and does it work?

Barley Water is an alkaline drink, hence drinking it will result in slightly alkaline urine. Alkaline urine provides a less than favourable environment for the infection to thrive, due to the fact that the bacteria prefer acidic conditions.  Furthermore the peeing knifes feeling  is thought to be because of acidic urine, which is neutralised by alkaline drinks, including Barley Water.

Drinking plenty of Barley water or any fluid is also beneficial for cystitis sufferes since maintaining a good flow of urine to flushes out bad bacteria,

Make some barley water: boil pearl barley for 20-30 minutes, allow to cool and add some honey and lemon.  Drink 3 cups/ day.
Half a glass each of barley gruel, mixed with buttermilk and the juice of half a lime, is an excellent diuretic. It is  taken twice daily.
Barley water, made by boiling 1 g of barley in 1 liter of water for 30 minutes, soothes symptoms when cooled, strained and sipped through the day.
Make up some home-made barley water by boiling up a cupful of barley in enough water to cover it. Add the rind of a lemon and simmer until the barley is soft. Strain off the barley, add some honey and sip slowly throughout the day.

What Is Pipsissewa and Can It Relieve Cystitis Pain?

Pipsissewa is a plant that was traditionally used by Native Americans for the relief of urinary issues such as cystitis. It is used by herbalists because it is a good disinfectant and antimicrobial for the bladder. Unfortunately the herb isn't good for long term treatment usage, but may help with short term cystitis relief.

Pipsissewa may interfere with birth control pills due to it's phytoestrogenic properties, so take care.

Every Week, Love Relief For Cystitis will be tracking down 5 different natural remedies to use to treat cystitis!

This week we're trying out the following remedies.....

Water
Plain water flushes out the kidneys better than anything and will help to get rid of the bacteria that are causing the infection. Drink plenty and often. Make up 600ml (1 pint) of mild chamomile tea and drink it throughout the day to flush germs out of the bladder. This helps to increase the production of urine and help wash the bacteria out of the bladder.

Cajuput

Bicarbonate of soda
To some extent alkalizing the urine helps to eradicate the germs and also soothe the bladder. You can try using bicarbonate of soda, 5ml (1 tea spoon) in half a glass of water, two or three times a day, Taking a teaspoonful of bicarbonate of soda mixed with half a pint of water, or any other bland liquid, every hour. It makes the urine less acidic, which stops bacteria from breeding - it also relieves the burning sensation that so often accompanies cystitis. reduce the acidity of the urine to make it more difficult for the bacteria to survive and also help to reduce the pain and discomfort. stops bacteria multiplying. It also eases the stinging sensation when passing urine.
Spirulina/Wheat grass/Barley Grass
There is lots of info/books on ways to to alkalize. The best ways are to breathe deeply, drink plenty of alkaline water, and super alkaline foods like green powders (spirulina/wheat grass/barley grass).
